This custom Shinka is another unique build assembled in-house at Kakushin, bringing together a traditional Japanese blade with a handle that gives the entire piece a completely different personality.

For this setup, we paired the blade with a custom handle made from Amboyna burl and shimmering pearl epoxy. The natural depth and movement of the burl contrast beautifully with the luminous epoxy, creating a handle that feels refined, warm, and highly distinctive without being overly loud. Its shield-style shape, rounded underneath and squared along the top, sits comfortably in the hand while adding a clean, elegant profile to the knife.

At the heart of this piece is the Shinka blade itself. Forged in Japan from Aogami Blue #2 carbon steel, it delivers that crisp, responsive cutting feel that carbon steel lovers look for. With a hardness of approximately 61 HRC, it offers a practical balance of edge retention, toughness, and ease of sharpening, making it a great choice for cooks who want strong performance without making the knife overly demanding to maintain.

The kurouchi finish gives the blade its darker, forged appearance, preserving the texture and character left from the blacksmithing process. It feels honest and traditional — a knife that shows its handmade nature clearly, with a rustic Japanese aesthetic that remains approachable and highly usable.

Made for us in Tosa, Japan, by a fourth-generation workshop with roots going back to 1920, the Shinka series reflects a long evolution from agricultural tools to carefully crafted kitchen knives. The geometry, taper, and balance are all built with real kitchen use in mind, giving the blade a smooth, confident feel through vegetables, proteins, and daily prep work.

With this exclusive Amboyna burl and pearl epoxy handle, this particular Shinka becomes a true 1-of-1 custom piece. It blends tradition, comfort, performance, and individuality into a knife that is both highly functional and visually unforgettable.
